Профессор богословия университета Нотр Дам, Индиана, США. В 1968 г. получил степень бакалавра искусств колледжа Кальвина в Грэнд Рэпидс, шт. Мичиган. В 1971 г. - степень бакалавра богословия в Кальвинистской богословской семинарии Грэнд Репидс, шт. Мичиган, со специализаций в библейских языках и литературе. С 1971 по 1972 гг. занимался исследовательской деятельностью в Университете св. Андрея в Шотландии, где специализировался на изучении арамейского и древнееврейского языков и Ветхого Завета. В 1976 г. получил степень доктора философии (PhD) Гарвардского университета в области исследования ближневосточных языков и цивилизаций.

С 1976 по 1981 гг. был помощником профессора по религиоведению университета Северной Каролины. С 1981 по 1986 гг. адъюнкт-профессор по религиоведению университета Северной Каролины, с 1987 г. - профессор. С 1991 по 1998 гг. профессор по еврейским Священным текстам университета Нотр Дам, Индиана. С 1998 г. профессор богословия университета Нотр Дам.
